About us

Boquete Equestrian Estates is a full-on breeding and training facility, located in the highlands of Panama, near a quiet little coffee pueblo, nestled against picturesque Volcan Baru. Our facility consists of 12 acres, making up pastures, paddocks, 80' x 80' indoor schooling ring, 120' x 240' outdoor competition arena, round pen, 12 stalls (with state-of-the-art upstairs feeding system) a wash-bay, tack-room, Farrier station and connecting viewing deck with public restrooms for spectator ease and comfort.

From riding lessons to boarding, our professional staff offers decades of combined equine experience and knowledge. We are family owned and operated, making for a fun and professional equine experience for the entire family, in a wholesome environment. Here at Boquete Equestrian Estates, we strive to provide quality care for our customer's horses, superior training for our students and a healthy, safe, worry-free environment for parents and children alike.

All students are taught "from the ground up".  This means students are taught how to behave around horses in general, as well as               grooming and tacking, which combine with more advanced skill sets later on.   Learning how to groom and saddle your own horse is an      essential part of the riding experience and we want all of our students to be competent in these areas.  We firmly believe you are not  safe on the back of the horse, until you are safe on the ground with them.  We also realise that horseback riding can become very  expensive.  With that in mind, we strive to maintain prices that make riding affordable for everyone.

Our Instructors are Certified Riding Instructors, having spent entire lives owning, selectively breeding, raising, training and showing horses. Our resident Instructor and Coach is Red Cross CPR/First Aid, EFR (Emergency First Response) as well as Combat First Aid trained. Jessica Burgh holds several certificates in Equine First Aid, Equine Safety, Careers in the Equine Industry, as well as a very impressive Scientific Farrier certificate and experience of 17 years, in the field of corrective trimming and therapeutic shoeing.

STANDARDS OF PROFICIENCY

As a means of measuring the progress and level of achievements of our students, Boquete Equestrian Estates has established standards, keeping within the framework of the international movement of the Pony Club throughout the world.

The 2010 standards are divided into D1, D2, D3, C1, C2, C3, B, H-A, and A levels to provide a progressive programme from one level to the next in the horse management and riding.  Whenever the word “pony” is used, it is to be understood that the British call horses and ponies just that.  Upon successfully completing the examination for a rating, the member is awarded a Certificate and may begin study of the material outlined under the next higher standard.  Each rating must be achieved before the next level is attempted.

Training with us at BEC

It is with hard work and dedication that separates the good riders from the great.

Tenacity.  Dedication.  Perseverance.  Drive.  These are all words that our  Equestrian athletes have known.  What separates them from the rest? Their style. The way they attack the course with no fear.  They forge ahead,  tackling whatever obstacle stands in their way.  We have been known for turning out extremely aggressive riders, with amazing self confidence. Whether in the show ring, or hacking out.   One word simply does not exist for us here… “defeat.”  Two words are forbidden here, " I can't".

Come and train with us in gorgeous Panama.  Be part of the team..  You have your choice of Quarter Horses, imported Sport Horses, Percherons and the local horses, superbly trained by our Canadian coach.   We are a primary stop for those  wanting to incorporate horse riding with a nice vacation, or someone wanting to learn how to finally land that troublesome triple combination.
Accommodations are easily obtainable just down the road at Boquete River Inn, formerly known as Cabinas Momentum.

B.E.E. is committed to providing the best possible care for each horse.  We offer individualized feed plans, turn-out and on-site farm manager.  We are a full care facility and one of the only full-on Equestrian Centres to be found in  Chiriqui, as we strive to promote our beloved classical Dressage and sporty Show-Jumping to the Roping fanatics and their beautiful Quarter Horse athletes.  We love to ride western and even instruct and train this style, but you are hard pressed to find anyone in this area offering English trained horses and tack.

Our canyon view stables and arenas sit proudly between the two rivers, Caldera and Cochea, and offer one of the best views in the area, with Volcan Baru as our dramatic backdrop. Las Trancas is the most narrow section of land to be found here, and located exactly where we are at the "bottle neck"between Restaurante Las Ruinas and Casa Hogar Trisker. Many years ago, when a cowboy desired a new mount, he would round his horse of choice up on this very spot, running these very grounds, chasing his prospect with rope twirling. Old remnants of the "horse" wall are still visible on this property, so it thrills us to know we're keeping tradition alive.  Las Trancas simply means to 'block' off or 'close' off.

If you choose to join our family by boarding and riding with us, you too will be part of keeping this tradition alive.  The "Horse Wall" is still visible and fairly good condition and can easily be viewed while riding in arena.

Amenities

We are a full care facility.  B.E.E. offers an 80' x 80' indoor schooling ring,  120' x 240' foot outdoor Competition arena, both with sand over hard compact material footing.  Our boarder's barn is made entirely out of concrete, which we have found to be cooler in the summer and better in the winter.  It  has  12' x 12' and 12' x 14' box stalls, cross-ties available in the aisle way as well as tie stations at the stalls, and wash rack for bathing, with washing machine.  Boarders are welcome to keep their tack boxes in front of their horses' stalls and B.E.E.  also has a separate tack room for extra space, should you need it.  We designed a specialized viewing deck  in the indoor arena for the parents and guests to watch as their children ride, from the convenience of couches and plush chairs. The viewing deck consists of a vestibule type entrance from highway side, with an 80 person occupancy in main space and public restrooms with 2 sinks in common area.

Convenient access to all stalls and service areas is provided by the stable's cross-shaped design.  2 large aisle-way doors and people door create a comfortable interior environment.

Each stall is 12' x 12' with a 24' run, and we have one 12' x 14' large Warmblood stall and a massive foaling stall. A secured tack room, tack-up areas, wash bays, two utility work areas, instructor/trainer office, and public restroom complete the floor plan.

A security system and a fly-control installation add protection to the stable. Music is constantly provided, adding a final touch to an elegant facility. We receive many compliments on our place and invite you to visit soon!

Stalls available for purchase

Inquire in person if you desire your own stall.  There are still several main stalls available which offer a connection to indoor arena. The future stables will be built adjacent and to the East of the main stables and will not offer the easy (dry) walk from stall to indoor or viewing deck.

FAQ's for MP Courses

Q: Do I have to be an Officer to receive training?
A: We prefer if you are, however, if you are not, we will not be able to get National Police to sign off on your certificate, but you may take course.

Q: What gear do I have to bring with me on plane?
A: Just bring your boots- we have saddles and all tack

Q: What kind of crowd control training do you really teach?
A: You will have to be able to negotiate riot like situations confidently, on a horse that is not 100% riot trained- yet will be at the end of your course. You will also have an animal that will walk over humans and run into them- something they are not naturally inclined to do. That is the whole idea, using your mount as your primary weapon. We do not go into depth with seizure procedures while mounted, but you must be able to chase, hold off and aprehend a perp while mounted.

Q: How trained are your horses?
A: They are solid on flat work and jumping. For crowd control they are fine, but riot situations will be their hurdle.

Q: Just who do you have instructing these courses?
A: Our primary Instructor is also a Coach who has grown up riding and competing horses, having gone through Panama Police Academy and Boot Camp, followed by personal military training and finished off with High Risk Operations. Experience drawn from real world operations.

Q: What if I have never ridden a horse, yet want to become a Mounted Police Officer?
A: We are not able to issue you a license in this area as Panama does not have these mounted  programmes, however we can teach you everything you need to know to be able to successfully complete training in your country. You will be awarded with a certificate upon successful completion of course which will help establish you as a serious, aspiring Mounted Police Officer.

Q: What kind of accommodations are available?
A: We do not house students, yet can offer you great advise on where to inquire for suitable accommodations close by.

Testimonials

For anyone contemplating horseback riding lessons in the Boquete/David area, there is only one person I would recommend - Jessica at Boquete Equestrian Center. Jessica has been riding and competing since she was seven years old and all that experience really shows. She teaches riding in a safe and systematic way that gives beginning riders a very solid foundation to grow on, both in the saddle and on the ground. Her knowledge and mastery of all the disciplines makes her the perfect instructor for a more advanced rider, as well as a superb trainer. Whether your goal is pleasure, competition, or a top notch training facility for your horse, I cannot recommend anyone more enthusiastically. Jessica would be a find anywhere in North America, but to find her here, in our little corner of the world, is liking finding gold!

~ Susan Bostrom, mother of a 12 year old dressage student

Boquete

So, I am a city girl, raised in the suburbs. But through some amazing twists and turns, I find myself now on 20 acres, here in rural Panama. One of the big draws to country life was that my daughter could finally get a horse. We found and purchased a beautiful stallion, but we both soon came to realize that there is a mountain of information to be learned and understood when it comes to horses. We thought simply turning our stallion into a gelding would be enough to calm him, but again, we learned that he needed way more training than we were equipped to give. Our boy was slightly wild and all of my children and their friends were afraid of him. This was not what I had envisioned with the dreams of owning a horse. So, when I heard of Jessica and that she would be willing to train him, I was thrilled. I knew I didn't want the local way of training which usually involves what I would call questionable methods. Jessica has a round pen, and I did know enough to know this is a superior method. Not only did she work with our horse, she worked with my daughter and myself as well, until our bad boy saw us as authority figures and decided to show some respect. Now we have a calm boy, that all my kids trust. My daughter and I have been equipped with the necessary information and understanding to maintain our horse's respect and ultimately keep all of us happier. He has been transformed from an unnerving liability that we felt we simply couldn't handle, to a focal point and source of pride for our farm. Jessica's knowledge and ability to work with and understand horses is unmatched in this region. She is wonderfully patient with children and has an amazing instinct with the training process of both the rider and horse. Anyone who is willing to put their faith in her for either their personal training or their horses', will be moved toward a broader and healthier understanding of the Equestrian science, from the human perspective and the horse's and will more fully equipped to enjoy all elements of horsemanship.

~ Jenni Bliss
El Frances, Panama

Jessica is an exceptionally caring person and this is especially evident when it comes to her love, care and concern for horses. She is actively involved in promoting proper care for horses as well as in rescuing horses in danger from lack of care and neglect at her own personal expense --  Jess truly wants nothing but the best for these noble animals.

Jess has taken it upon herself to open classes called pony pals up to teach children proper riding, care, all about equipment and love of animals. Jess has taken time out of her busy schedule to allow visitors such as my wife and I to come to her ranch and learn about horses and teaching us how to care for the horses. I’ve seen her patiently teach someone how to properly care and shoe a horse – explaining step by step not only what needs to be done but why it is done that and the consequences of failing to do so.

Jessica’s love for horses is limitless and her knowledge of all that is horses is boundless. If someone wants to know everything there is to know about horses then one of best people to talk to would be Jess – she is a patient and caring instructor.

~ Dennis Nutting

Alto Boquete

“ I was an American looking for a place to ride, and saw the sign on the highway, so I stopped in and scheduled a lesson for the next day. I have been training in the states. I had never jumped. In that first lesson Jessica had me doing cross rails at the end of the lesson, on her amazing American Warmblood. Bravo, Jessica!”

Brenda Mertz, California

“ There are many trainers and coaches in the lower mainland. I had searched high and low for someone willing to work with my little Arabian mare. No one wanted to, saying that she was too crazy and an Arab to boot. We all know Arabians have a bad rap in the horse world. Anyhow, I called Jessica up after someone gave me her Xenophon business card. She taught many of the local girls who jumped and did dressage. Not only did she correct Flicka’s problem, she also helped out with my grumpy gelding turning him into a nice horse as well. I actually cried when she told me she was going to move to Central America. Where ever would I find such a great trainer? ”

 Miriam, Coquitlam, B.C. Canada

“ I ride English and am constantly looking for someone who will work with my horse. I love him and don’t want to sell him, but all my coaches hate him, and they kept me from showing and competitions. We're talking banned from all lower mainland areas! Jessica had just moved a horse into Hazelmere Stables, where I board, and she agreed to work with my gelding. Not only did she fix his bucking problem… He used to buck like a PRCA horse making it so I couldn’t even ride! She also corrected his balking at the jump. You see… All my coach’s don’t have that aggressive way of riding Jessica does. Because she is not just English, but rides Western as well. I have never seen someone buck out a horse like she did. And this was in an Engish saddle! That horse listened to her after that. He respected her so much, he would even look to her to see what she told him next. She only used body language. Never force. Thanks to her I can now hack my knot-head out and about in the Hazelmere Equestrian Park area, and not be asked to leave. I can also go to shows. Thank you, Jessica!

One happy equestrian! Sara- Langley, B.C. Canada

WHAT IS A SPORT HORSE?

Thousand of years ago, the warm blood horse was by far superior than any other horse.  It was known as the charger, the heavy built war horses that fought many a battle, bravely carrying their knights wearing their colours proudly.  The light riding horses such as Arabians, were not capable of carrying a knight, his cumbersome armour and supplies, hundreds of miles over rough terrain.  Only the strongest horses were able to embark on such courageous endeavors.  These horses were the heavy horses.  The Chargers.  The amazing war horse.

,
Lucasia Sheridan, full blooded Percheron- This is what the Knights Templar rode, a "cold blood."

In Europe through out history, the warm blood has been used for work, sports, and to haul many a heavy cart or carriage.  It was very organised and meticulous.  Rules and regulations governing the breeding and stock to be used was not only state affairs, but a federal matter as well, resulting in outstanding blood stock of the finest quality.  Enthusiasts from all over the world go in search for horses like these.

Very recently, the talented and very versatile warm blood horses arrived in North America.  Since then, riders from all over, including Central and South America have acquired such horses.  The breeds from the Dutch, the Germans, the Swedes, and the Swiss were accepted, resulting in having the first American groups and associations.

Although it was a good idea for the original organisations of Europe to have rules educating the people, now the time has come to produce and promote our own Sport Horses.  That is right.  North, Central, and South America.  With controlled inspections the PSHR assures the most selective breeding to produce the ideal Sport Horse.  A noble Sport Horse, correctly built, of the modern type that has the capability to function at an Olympic level in all disciplines.

The incentive for the owners of the stallions and mares is a promise of a selective programme in Panama’ and other countries, resulting in the representation and sales of warm blood horses through out the world.

The Panamerican Sport Horse Registry is not a lucrative association.  It’s the only one of its kind to register horses that participate in the sports supported by the USET, ( United States Equestrian Team) in centroamerica.   These sports are as follows:  Dressage, Show Jumping, Combined Training, and Combined Driving.   All the representatives and directors are volunteers.  The PHSR does not have any paid employees.

Eligibility

To produce strong, nicely conformed, big boned horses with correct bone structure the Europeans bred heavy draft mares, to lighter stallions.   A registered PSHR horse may be any breed, as long as it is not one hundred percent hot blooded, ( Arab or Thoroughbred ) or one hundred percent cold blooded, ( Drafts such as Percherons and Clydesdales).

Price of registry

$120 registration and process fee.
$35.00 for Blue Preferred studs to get written in official stud book.
Inspections are free.

Requirements to qualify

v     It is vital that the horse has a minimal score of the requirements at inspection time in order to pass the classification.
